minisymposium "APPLIED COMBINATORIAL AND GEOMETRIC TOPOLOGY" (8ECM, 8th European Congress in Mathematics, June 20-26, 2021 - Portoroz, Slovenia)
Public Engagement Combinatorial and geometric topology are useful tools to tackle problems in various branches of mathematics, physics, and engineering. Graph and knot theory is connected to biological structures and to string theory.
Colored graphs have proved to be an interesting approach to n-dimensional quantum gravity, via random tensor models. Topological insight is becoming crucial in data science, by providing new computational tools for the
understanding of complex systems. Meanwhile, computational topology plays a key role in shape theory and pattern recognition.
The goal of the mini-symposium is to showcase present developments in the study of low-dimensional manifolds, focusing on geometric structures, combinatorial methods, and topological tools, with an eye on applications.
The talks will touch upon the themes below:
- geometric topology.
- combinatorial topology
- interplay of computational topology and algebra
- applications: random tensor models and colored graphs, DNA structures...
