Abstract:
Introduction. Evidence-based practice has emerged as a priority in efforts to improve health care quality. Aim of the present study is to analyse the obstacles limiting searching for evidence and its application in the practice of the occupational physician.Materials and methods. The study has been carried out during the course, organized by the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, on the Evidence Based Occupational Health. The objectives of the course consisted in the acquisition of new knowledge to provide an effective protection of the workers’ health, the development of searching models based on scientific evidence and the development of problem solving skill. Results and conclusion. Eight main themes emerged as obstacles in the adoption of practice founded on the Evidence Based Occupational Health paradigm. The themes can be classified in: (i) technical or pragmatic factors (access to electronic information resources, skills in searching information resources, clinical question tracking, time) and (ii) emotional or cultural factors (clinical question priority, personal initiative, team dynamics, institutional culture). Participants showed a positive attitude toward the approach, based on the instruments and techniques provided from the formative model, aiming at satisfying their informative needs.
