abstract:
The study of post-stroke aphasia in adult subjects provides a model to understand normal language processing, in general and also in bilingual subjects. After a short discussion of this statement and a presentation of the main characters of aphasia and its treatment, the paper considers the analogies between the neural mechanisms underlying aphasia recovery and those underlying the acquisition of a second language. The paper's general purpose is to highlight and discuss the possible interactions between aphasiology and acquisitional linguistics, both in the perspective of exploiting theories and methods of acquisitional linguistics in order to define rehabilitation strategies for adult apahasic subjects, and of collecting information on the mechanisms involved in bilingual language processing and in second language learning.
