abstract:
The text and exercise book contains an introduction to the phonetic system of the German language and is supplemented by a glossary of basic phonetic terms. First, the German phonetic system (vowels and consonants) is treated, whereby phonation (aspiration and glottal stop), unaccented vocalized endings, vocalized R, consonant clusters and word boundaries form separate exercise units. Finally, a detailed section on prosodic phenomena of the German language (word stress, sentence stress, melody and intonation) focuses on what is the main didactic principle in the entire catalogue of exercises: In all exercise units, prosody is always practiced, if possible, even when individual sounds are in focus, since these are always embedded in words or whole sentences and, if possible, presented in a communicative context. All units conclude with dialogues and/or a short text. The Pronunciation Course German is a comprehensive, source-language-independent exercise program for learners of German with previous knowledge (intermediate / advanced), whereby selected parts can be picked out with guidance for each learning level. The course is not only suitable as a supplement in class, but with its accompanying audio material is also very suitable for individual pronunciation training and self-study. A concluding word list explains the words and expressions of the exercise texts that may be unknown to the learners.
The pronunciation course focuses on listening and speaking or reading aloud according to a model, whereby the speaking exercises on CD (available separately) are held at a natural speaking rate. With almost 7 hours of audio recordings (incl. pauses for repeat), it offers plenty of material to practice German pronunciation in everyday situations and with vocabulary and expressions commonly used in conversation.
The second edition has been updated and expanded in terms of content and supplemented with additional exercises, a phonetic table and the phonetics glossary.
All exercises are available on two MP3 CDs or optionally on 6 CDs separately.
