abstract:
German film subtitling in the 1930s. Reconstruction of the subtitling strategies using the example of "His Great Love" (1936). Intertitling during the silent cinema was already a tried and tested way of explaining the story to the viewer. Subtitles have evolved from intertitles, through extensive lower subtitles, to two-line lower subtitles. The latter were successfully used in Poland and Germany in the 1930s, as evidenced by the copies of films in which such subtitles were preserved. A Polish film from 1936, with German subtitles from the same year has been found in Polish archives; we decided to examine the subtitles on this basis and try to reconstruct the principles of early German subtitling. The article presents the conclusions of the research conducted on the archival material discovered.
