abstract:
Jean-Baptist Lamarck's transformist theory was able to coordinate decisive arguments to undermine a static and prejudiced view of nature. However, many of his rich insights have been underestimated, distorted or ignored altogether. Particularly important is his insistence on the complex dynamics that lead to the transformation of organic needs, forms and capacities. Over long periods of time, these dynamics profoundly influence the system of relationships between living beings and the environment. This system is dependent on a multiplicity of variables increasing with organic complexification and the appearance of the human being. The setting of a dialectical relational system makes Lamarck a forerunner of contemporary ecologism.
