abstract:
The study of the Messinian Gypsum oucrop of the Vena del Gesso at Tossignano (Northern Italy), starting from the ‘60s of
the last century, paved the way for the various research lines that allowed to define the characteristics of the first phase
of the Messinian salinity crisis, the geological catastrophe that involved the Mediterranean basin between 5.97 and 5.33
million years ago. The characteristics of gypsum represent outstanding examples of the geological evolution of our planet
and contribute in a fundamental way to making the evaporite karst phenomena of the Northern Apennines unique, worthy candidates for the inclusion in the UNESCO’s world heritage list.
