Short description:
Hinges and AI: From Hinge-Trust to E-Trust / Coliva, Annalisa. - (2026), pp. 165-188.
abstract:
This chapter critically examines current accounts of trust with respect to AI. It shows how the notion of hinge trust, which eschews moral connotations, and is at the foundation of all epistemic inquiries, can better account for our trust in AI (when present). The chapter also traces an important distinction between trust and trustworthiness, in general and with regard to AI. As a result, it allows to properly map contemporary discussions around AI as targeting its trustworthiness, and allows to integrate it with a suitable account of the attitude of trust human beings have toward AI tools (when they have it).
