Curriculum Vitae
Matteo Cavaliere has co-authored more than 40 articles published in scientific journals and 20 articles published in international conference proceedings. His research activities mainly focus on the following areas: Natural Computing, Theory of Computation, Game Theory, Synthetic and Systems Biology, and Complex Systems.
He obtained a degree in Computer Science from the University of Salerno in 2001 and a PhD in Logic, Computation and Artificial Intelligence from the University of Seville in 2006.
Before becoming Associate Professor at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (October 2023), he was Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK (August 2019 – September 2023), and Lecturer in Computer Science at the same institution (December 2017 – August 2019), where he taught undergraduate and advanced courses in algorithms and programming.
Previously, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Edinburgh, UK (2014–2017), at the National Centre for Biotechnology (CNB-CSIC), Spain (2009–2013), and at Microsoft Research – University of Trento, Centre for Computational and Systems Biology, Italy (2006–2009).
He is a member of the editorial board of the journals Mathematics (MDPI) and Scientific Reports (Springer Nature) and has served as guest editor of a special issue of Natural Computing in 2018 on synthetic and systems biology. He has also been until 2026 in the editorial board of the journal "Synbio" (MDPI).
For his studies in complex systems (social and biological), he was invited in 2014 to the “NAFKI Conference – Collective Behaviors: From Cells to Society”, organized by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
In 2018, he received the “Academy New Appointments” grant from the British Computer Society (BCS). During his fellowship at the University of Edinburgh, he was co-investigator of the research project “Evolutionary Game Theory for Tissue Engineering”, funded by the U.S. National Academies and the Keck Foundation.
He has served on the scientific committees of several international conferences in the field of unconventional and natural computation, including Unconventional Computation and Natural Computation (2017, 2018, 2021, 2023, 2026) and the Conference on Membrane Computing (2020). He also co-organized the international workshop “Fluctuations, Tipping Points and Emergence in Eco-Evolutionary Dynamics” in 2019 at the University of Leeds, UK.
