Prof. Paolo Ventura – Curriculum Vitae
Born in Modena on 23-02-1966.
In 1984 he received his Classical High School diploma with a grade of 60/60.
In October 1990, he received a degree in Medicine from the University of Modena with a grade of 110 / 110 cum laude, discussing an experimental thesis entitled "Metabolic and neuro-functional aspects of liver cirrhosis."
In February 1991 he was licensed to practice medicine and has become a member of the Medical Association of Modena since 14/02/1991 (no.4493)
From February 1991 to June 1995, he worked as a Substitute GP (USL of Modena) and as a Substitute Day and Night Medical Guard (At AUSL of Modena and AUSL of Reggio Emilia).
From January 1, 1994 to February 28, 1995 Fellow at UOC of Medicine II of the Policlinico University Hospital of Modena ("Urgencies in Internal Medicine").
In October 1995, he obtained his Specialty in Internal Medicine at the School of Internal Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Modena with a grade of 70/70 cum laude, discussing an experimental thesis on "Role of hepatic siderosis in the clinical-biochemical expression of Porphyria Cutanea Tarda."
From July 1, 1995, he took up his position as a University Researcher with indefinite term (SSD MED/09) (later confirmed in tenure in July 1998) at the Chair of Geriatrics and Gerontology of the Department of Internal Medicine, University of Modena. Since that date, he has carried out research and teaching activities, as well as clinical functions as Medical Manager Level I at the Hospital Division of Geriatrics of the Ospedale Estense of the Azienda USL of Modena affiliated with the Chair of Geriatrics and Gerontology.
From September 16, 2001 he took up service as a Confirmed University Researcher at the Chair of Internal Medicine (Department of Medicine and Medical Specialties) and from that date he has been carrying out research and teaching activities as well as clinical functions as Integrated Level I Medical Director at the Hospital Division of Internal Medicine of the Azienda Policlinico di Modena, affiliated with the Chair of Internal Medicine.
From 2001 to present Head of Training and Referent for Major Instruments of the Department of Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Medical Specialties of the Policlinico University Hospital of Modena.
Since 2005 Assistant Professor in Internal Medicine and Clinical Methodology.
Since 2006 he has been Responsible for Research at the Porphyria Specialist Centre in Modena, a recognized expert centre within the International Porphyria Network (IpNet) (see IPNET, the International Porphyria Network | International Porphyria Network).
In 2007, he received his Master's degree (two-year) Level II in “Evidence Based Medicine and Health Research Methodology” from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
Since 2008 in charge of the Outpatient Clinic and Laboratory of the diagnostics of Porphyrias and Amino Acid Metabolism Disorder Diseases afferent to the UOC of Internal Medicine (Department of Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Medical Specialties) of the University Hospital Policlinico of Modena).
From Jan. 1st, 2009 to April 30th 2023 holder of Simple Professional Organizational Module "Clinical Management of Patients with Heme Metabolism Defect Disease." The Modena center is recognized as a National Reference Center for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Porphyrias.
Since January 1, 2009, he has been in charge of the outpatient clinics for the Clinical Management of Hepatocarcinoma, Liver Cirrhosis and Complications and Liver Transplantation afferent to the UOC of Internal Medicine (Department of Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Medical Specialties of the University Hospital Policlinico of Modena).
From Feb. 1, 2009, to June 30, 2013, he served as Secretary of the Bachelor of Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

Now redefined as 06/MEDs-05) at the Department of Maternal, Child and Adult Medical and Surgical Sciences); since that date, he has carried out research and teaching activities as well as healthcare functions as a Level I Integrated Medical Director at the Internal Medicine Unit of the Modena Polyclinic Hospital.
On March 28, 2025, he obtained the qualification for Management Functions of Complex Structures (certification through participation in the Advanced Course in Management for the Management of Complex Healthcare Structures at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia) and is therefore registered in the public register of healthcare managers with a management training certificate qualifying him for management functions of complex structures for the Emilia-Romagna region.

Research Activities
Research activity is mainly in the metabolic field (sulfur amino acid metabolism and related pathologies; alterations in Heme metabolism and related pathologies) and in the field of hepatology (with particular reference to the pathophysiological aspects of metabolism and hemodynamic during chronic hepatopathy, insulin resistance associated with liver cirrhosis and acquired and congenital thrombophilia factors and their association with the development of portal thrombosis in patients with and without HCC, the association between chronic hepatopathy and cardiac dysfunction; to the methods of treatment and clinical management of the patient with HCC complicating liver cirrhosis).
Prof. Ventura has authored and co-authored several national and international publications (with IF) and has participated with personal contributions and as an organizer in several national and international meetings.
