Curriculum Vitae

DAVIDE MALAGOLI
Curriculum Vitae
(Updated: August 2026)

Davide Malagoli is Professor of Comparative Anatomy, Cellular and Developmental Biology (SSD BIOS/04A) at the Department of Life Sciences, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UniMORE), where he directs the Laboratory of Comparative and Developmental Immunobiology and Comparative Anatomy.
Through a comparative and evolutionary approach, his research aims to understand the roles of immune cells not only in host defence, but also in complex biological processes such as regeneration, development, and responses to environmental stressors.
For more than twenty years, his research has focused on the biology of immune cells in invertebrates, integrating comparative immunology, neuroendocrinology, and developmental biology. His primary experimental model is the freshwater apple snail Pomacea canaliculata.
According to the Scopus database (August 2026), his scientific production comprises 111 indexed publications, an H-index of 28, and approximately 5,300 citations. He is also editor of 3 international books, author of 13 book chapters in international and university textbooks, and co-author of more than 70 conference communications, including several invited lectures.

Selected scientific leadership positions include:
• Editor-in-Chief of ISJ – Invertebrate Survival Journal (since 2018), a diamond open-access journal indexed in Scopus, Web of Science, and the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)
• President of the Italian Society of Developmental and Comparative Immunobiology (SIICS) since 2022
• Chair of the Organizing Committee of the 24th National Meeting of the Italian Society of Developmental and Comparative Immunobiology (2024)
• Chair of the Organizing Committee of the 70th Congress of the Italian Society for Developmental and Cell Biology (GEI-SIBSC) (2025)
• Invited Speaker at the 16th Congress of the International Society of Developmental and Comparative Immunology (ISDCI) (Dalian, China, 2026)

Alongside his scientific activity, Professor Malagoli holds several institutional responsibilities at both national and university levels. He serves as Disciplinary Expert for the Italian National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes (ANVUR) and was a member of the National Scientific Qualification (ASN) Committee for Comparative Anatomy and Cytology (December 2023–August 2026). At UniMORE, he is currently Coordinator of the University Independent Evaluation Board and member of the University Animal Welfare Body (OPBA).
His teaching activity includes undergraduate and graduate courses in Comparative Anatomy, Comparative Immunobiology and Animal Histology. He has supervised more than 40 Bachelor's and Master's theses.
At the doctoral level, he is currently member of the Academic Board and supervisor of a PhD student within the PhD Programme in Models and Methods for Material and Environmental Sciences (UniMORE), and member of the Academic Board of the National PhD Programme in Biodiversity (University of Palermo). To date, he has supervised or co-supervised 4 PhD theses (including one international co-supervision) and has served as external examiner or reviewer for PhD candidates at several Italian universities.
During the last three years, Professor Malagoli coordinated the UniMORE research unit of the PRIN project NANOPIN – NANOPlastics in INvertebrates (2023–2025) and participated in the National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC), funded through the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) (2022-2026).

I hereby declare, under my sole responsibility and in accordance with the provisions of the Italian Presidential Decree No. 445/2000, that all the information contained in this curriculum vitae et studiorum is true, complete, and accurate.
