Michele Mariani Curriculum Vitae

Current and Previous Positions
Since January 2008, Michele Mariani has been a full-time researcher in General Psychology at the Department of Communication and Economics at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. He previously worked as a Research Fellow at the Multimedia Communication Laboratory of the University of Siena and as a Junior Researcher at the Institute for Socio-Organisational Research (IRSO), Milan. His research activity mainly focuses on cognitive ergonomics, human-centred design, and the experimental study of basic cognitive processes.

Visiting Academic Positions
In 1997, he was a Visiting Researcher for nine months within the EU Human Capital and Mobility Fellowship Programme at the Department of Computer Science, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Teaching Activities and PhD Supervision
He currently teaches Cognitive Processes in the Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Marketing and Business Organization and Applied Psychology in the Master’s Degree Programme in Management and Business Communication. Previously, he was a member of the PhD School in Humanistic Studies at UNIMORE.

Other Work Experience
He has carried out consulting and research activities in the areas of human factors, usability, and cognitive ergonomics for several Italian and international companies and public institutions, including the Fiat Research Centre (CRF), RAI Radiotelevisione Italiana, TIM, the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Autostrade per l’Italia, the Tuscany Regional Government, Banca Popolare dell’Emilia-Romagna (BPER), Whirlpool, Vodafone. He has also repeatedly served as an independent EU expert evaluator and reviewer for the FP6 and FP7 Framework Programmes.

Administrative Roles and Responsibilities
He currently serves as Faculty Delegate for Disability Support and as a member of the Committee for the Assessment of Italian Language Proficiency for International Students.

Scientific Organizations and Coordination of Academic Activities
He is the Founder and Director of the Cognitive Psychology and User Experience Design Laboratory (COLAB), UNIMORE.

Membership of Scientific Societies
He was formerly a member of the ACM and is currently a member of DHMore (Digital Humanities Research Centre, UNIMORE) and of the Italian Association of Psychology – Experimental Section.

Prizes and Awards
In 2019, he was part of the team (Violante A.; De Cia D.; Cattani A.; Mariani M.) awarded the Red Dot Design Award for the Salvagnini Face HMI interface design project.

Funding
He served as principal investigator for the local research unit in several EU-funded projects. These include: ‘Quality Assessment of Living with Information Technologies’ (QUALIT); ‘Virtual Environments for Construction Workers’ Instruction and Training’ (VECWIT); ‘Quality of Life in the Information Society’ (QLIS); ‘Work Process Knowledge in Technological and Organisational Development’ (WHOLE); ‘Enhanced Driver’s Perception in Poor Visibility’ (EDEL); ‘Designing the Information Cooperative for Sharing and Analysing Earth Observation Data’ (ICSA), EU-JRC; ‘Behavioural Modelling for Security in Airports’ (BEMOSA); ‘Communication Multimedia Unit Inside Car’ (COMUNICAR); ‘User-Driven Stimulation of Radical New Technological Steps in Surface Transport’ (U-STIR); ‘Tertiary Education for Mid-Life People’ (THEMP); ‘Safe Speed and Safe Distance’ (PReVENT/SASPENCE); and ‘New Social Risks in the European Knowledge Society and Higher Education’ (NESOR). He is currently involved in the Horizon Europe project ‘Societal-ready Safe and Transparent Human-Technology Interaction for the Automated Mobility Ecosystem’ (SENSEI). He has also participated in several national research projects, including: ‘Acting, Observing, and Acting Together: The Influence of the Other on Cognition and Action’, MURST PRIN; ‘Mental Simulation: Cognitive Basis and Applications’, MURST PRIN; 'Design of a Distributed Control System for Agricultural Tractors' (PROTRACT), Emilia-Romagna Regional Programme for Industrial Research, Innovation, and Technological Transfer.
