BAGNOLI Carla

Carla Bagnoli has been Full Professor of Theoretical Philosophy at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia since 2010, appointed through the “Rientro dei Cervelli” (Brain Gain) program. She teaches courses in philosophy of action, theory of practical reasoning, and moral and social epistemology, and has coordinated the industrial PhD program Reggio Childhood Studies since 2022.
She obtained her PhD in Philosophy from the University of Milan in 1996. From 1995 to 1997, she was first a Special Student and then a Visiting Fellow at the Department of Philosophy at Harvard University, as well as a Junior Fellow at the Program in Ethics and the Professions (now the Safra Center for Ethics). From 1997 to 1998, she was a postdoctoral researcher in Practical Philosophy at the University of Amsterdam. Beginning in 1998, she taught philosophy at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, where she was tenured as Associate Professor in 2004 and Full Professor in 2008.
In 2024, she was appointed Professorial Fellow at the Zentrum für Ethik und Philosophie in der Praxis Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. She has been elected Visiting Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford (2021–2022, 2023–2024), Professorial Fellow at the University of Oslo (2015–2018), and Visiting Professor at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, ENS Lyon, and the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. She has served as President of the National Committee for Research Evaluation, of which she has been a member since 2021, and as President of the Italian Society for Analytic Philosophy. She is a member of several professional societies and international networks and was elected to the Institut International de Philosophie in 2023.
From 2023 to 2026, she has been seconded to the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and affiliated with the B. Segre Interdisciplinary Center. In 2025, she was awarded the Humboldt Research Award by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in recognition of her scientific achievements.
