Game4CED - Gamification for color blindness early detection

Project
The project Game4CED combines board games and research on colour blindness with the goal of developing a board game as an educational tool for colour blindness early detection, increasing people's awareness of colour blindness, improving inclusivity and decreasing the risk of discrimination. Currently, colour blindness is not screened in schools in Italy, and colour vision tests are performed only to obtain a driving licence or to enter aviation. Thus, many people discover a colour vision deficiency only during adolescence or adulthood. Underscreened colour vision deficiencies can drive unwanted children discrimination, mainly when colour is used in educational activities or to perform assignments, and colour blind children can be easily excluded from social games or activities. Developing and integrating activities on colour blindness awareness in schools can help teachers, children, and educators in understanding this issue and create a more inclusive environment. Board games are particularly well-suited to be used in schools and can be considered an optimal way to engage children. Here we propose a novel use of board games to detect colour blindness MUR - BANDO 2022 PNRR Ministero dell'Università e della Ricerca symptoms. Game4CED will identify methods and parameters to develop a tool to assess board games' inclusivity and test it on about 100 most diffused games. The results will be used to develop ColorFit, a new board game for children to be used to make early and preliminary detection of colour blindness. Teachers will be involved throughout the project, in the design, development and test of learning activities, the board game itself, and the evaluation tools. A protocol of actions and best practices, called Game4CED Toolkit, will be developed in order to support teachers, parents and educators in using the game as a screening tool, understanding the condition and facing the child's colour vision issues. The Game4CED Toolkit will be composed of videos, didactic materials and booklets to create a more inclusive environment and activities. All videos and materials will be available freely under Creative Commons licensing. The project will include a testing phase of ColorFit and the Game4CED Toolkit in at least four schools, both in the north and in the south of Italy, involving and training teachers on the game and on the kit. A rich dissemination plan will be performed, including publication of several papers and a book, presentation of the results in conferences, organisation of a workshop and participation in several board game events and showcases.
