REVEALING THE UNKNOWN GENIZAH: HEBREW FRAGMENTS IN THE EMILIA REGION

Project
The reused Hebrew manuscripts preserved in the Emilia region are a unique case in the panorama of European Genizah. The variety of scriptural types (Italian, Sephardi, Ashkenazi), the plurality of authors identified, and the broad chronological spectrum covered by the parchments (from the 11th to the 15th century) confirm their crucial relevance in understanding social and cultural aspects of Jewish history. The philological study of these fragments has already made possible advancements in Hebrew palaeography and codicology. However, despite pioneering research, the Emilia region remains a largely unexplored field of investigation and analysis. After having discovered new fragments in Bologna and Modena ecclesiastical archives (diocesan, parishand congregation archives), the EMILIA-GENIZAH/2 wants to extend the research to the Piacenza area. Two main actions are foreseen: the digitisation and online release of the Modena and Bologna fragments; and a new survey (also aimed at the digitisation) throughout the Piacenza archives.
