The NEXT-SEA PROP project addresses the challenge of decarbonizing maritime transport by
developing innovative solutions for propulsion and onboard energy management. The
primary objective is to optimize hybrid propulsion systems through the use of digital twins and advanced
control architectures, improving the efficiency and operational resilience of ships. The project
envisions validating the solutions in demonstration cases on merchant ships, container vessels, and
ferries, with the aim of drastically reducing emissions in the maritime sector, strengthening
European leadership in the transition to zero-emission maritime transport.
The H2MORE Center of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, with Professor Davide Barater, is
involved in the simulation and implementation of power conversion systems. UNIMORE will
focus on the development of digital twin models for hybrid propulsion systems, as well as
the optimization of power conversion architectures. Professor Barater's expertise
in advanced energy system design and digital twin management will be
fundamental to the project.
