COMRADES IN DREAMS. LEINWANDFIEBER

The film’s subjects may live thousands of kilometers apart, but they are made of the same stuff: dreams. Traveling through Burkina Faso, North Korea, India and the United States, Uli Gaulke juxtaposes four different types of film people and their respective social roles that transcend mere entertainment. The result is an impassioned and acute slice of cinema in the
globalized world, where practical concerns are more important than the artwork and where ‘going to the
cinema’ does not mean simply ‘going to see a movie’. Through projectionists like Korea’s Han Jong Sil and
America’s Penny Tefertiller, managers of disparate theatres like Asane, a native of Africa, or ‘kings of
traveling cinema’ like Indian Anup, this film shows us the small, humble, daily accounts that make cinema a
rich and powerful dream.
