Abstract:
Darwin and Philosophy. The Darwinian revolution did not just affect biology. The theory of natural selection also started an intellectual revolution: not only did it impose the idea of evolution and placed man definitively in the animal kingdom, but it also introduced a new way of thinking and a new image of nature. This theory was so revolutionary that even today many people live outside “the world into which Darwin led us”, as the American palaeontologist George G. Simpson said. Both philosophy, in a strict sense, and the world of culture in general have had to come to terms with this great change, which is still going on, and is far from being finished.
