The effect of spoken language on the recipient can be investigated on the basis of verbal, non-verbal and paraverbal means as well as situational factors; in intercultural foreign-language communication, native-language-related peculiarities in the articulatory and prosodic domain are of particular importance. In a case study, the speech effect of German texts read aloud by Italophone speakers is investigated in listeners of German and Polish native language with regard to subjectively perceived intelligibility as well as the attribution of sympathy values and impression of competence. The effect of paraverbal factors is surveyed, while other factors are excluded (e.g. the visual channel). The determination of the results is done by questionnaires, which are evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively. In the discussion of the results, the two groups of listeners are compared and the following questions, among others, are addressed: a) Is the subjectively perceived intelligibility of texts by non-native speakers more likely to be based on segmental or suprasegmental interference? b) What are the differences in judgment between native and non-native recipients? c) What is the meaning of "foreign accent" in this context?
