abstract:
The aim of this paper is to reflect upon the translation of diatopic varietes. We will do it by the analysis of the French translation of an Italian contemporary novel, La vedova scalza by Salvatore Niffoi (2006, translated in 2012), which is characterized by the significant presence of Sardinian language both in the narrative and dialogues. The French translator, Dominique Vittoz, is known for having experimented with a new translation approach, where the use of French regionalisms in translating Italian diatopic expressions aims to produce on the final reader the same disorientation than the source text. We intend to analyze the translation of La vedova scalza in order to point out translation strategies, paying particular attention to the process of compensation. Our analysis will focus on a number of issues related to use of tha Sardinian language: translation of single words and expressions, syntax, interjections, discourse markers, and cultural references.
