The contribution proposes a historical excursus on the five general conferences of the Latin American episcopate from the constitution of CELAM, in Rio de Janeiro, in 1955, to the assembly of Aparecida, in Brazil, in 2007, with particular attention to the peculiarities of this singular experience of episcopal collegiality on a continental scale.
