Giovanni Testori was a poet, writer, essayist, playwright, theatre director, painter, art critic, and even actor, but he is hardly known (almost unknown) as a translator. Nonetheless, his Italian poetic rewriting of St Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians states clearly in its title (Traduzione della prima lettera ai Corinti) that we are dealing with a translation. In other essays and interviews, however, Testori did not hesitate to strongly express all his doubts about translating, especially when referred to theatre. This paper will try to verify how the conflict between his theoretical objection to translation stricto sensu and the practice of translating is reconciled. It will also investigate the relationship between the Translation of the First Letter to the Corinthians and the rest of Testori's artistic and literary production.
