abstract:
THE LOSS OF HANDCRAFTSMANSHIP IN THE TECHNOLOGICAL ERA - From Kant to Darwin, from Wallace to Bergson, the hand has been defined as the irreplaceable tool of the human species to free itself from nature and subdue it. Yet is the situation still the same in the age of deferring to technology every task that concerns us? Is this looming danger only about the ability to survive social and energy crises, or does it also concern our disposition to produce authentic art? Art indeed requires the ability to mould matter. Faced with these questions, it will be useful to recover the lesson of Robert Graves, who surrounded himself exclusively with handmade objects in order to create and communicate poetically. Indeed, it should not be forgotten that the Greek term techne indicated precisely man's artistic ability, even before mere technique.
