Abstract:
In the fieldofforensic medicineit is often of paramountimportancetobeaccurately in estimating thetimein whichaninjury
was inflicted. The chapter illustrates what a forensic histopathologist needs to know to assess the wound age. Knowledge of
wound healing (WH) processes and of cellular-extracellular matrix mediators is required to estimate the wound age. In this
chapter, which reviews current studies, the authors report the most important features of WH that are relevant for forensic
studies and the most reliable markers of wound age assessment. Finally, new perspectives given by omics sciences pave the
way for future interdisciplinary research.
