Abstract:
How could and can we speak of freedom, especially religious freedom, in ancient Greek philosophy and religion, in Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and in both yesterday’s and today’s multi-religious landscape? The present volume explores this issue, which, due to its breadth and complexity, offers different perspectives on religious and theological contexts and may ignite a multidisciplinary dialogue. The contributions from international scholars deal with various aspects of religious freedom. They cover a wide time range and include different cultures with their religions, beliefs, and theologies: ancient Greece, ancient Israel and the contexts of Hellenistic Hebrew/Aramaic and Greek-speaking Judaism, early Christianity, the Middle Ages, and the Early Modern Period, focusing on Far Eastern Islam, the Jewish Renaissance, and Christian Europe up to the present day.
