Short description:
Bassani e la poetica della traduzione: del tradurre e dell’essere tradotto in francese / Vinci, Serena. - (2026), pp. 17-30.
abstract:
This paper focuses on Bassani's relationship with translation into and from French. The first part, devoted to the French translation of Bassani's works, analyzes the only recently published translation of Una città di pianura, Une ville de plaine, and a special edition with a parallel text of Gli occhiali d'oro, focusing on translation practices and questions of translation methodology. The second part, instead, focuses on several translations by Bassani of poems by Rimbaud, Valéry, Apollinaire, and Paul-Jean Toulet, but especially on his translations of prose texts, such as Bassani's rare translation of a text by Voltaire, Vita privata di Federico II (Rome, Atlantica, 1945). This second, more substantial part aims to explore the poetics of Bassani's translation. To this end, linguistic and stylistic aspects are explored in the poems, as well as contextual and thematic aspects in the translations of the prose texts, all dating back to the early phase of his literary production. The aim is to demonstrate how translation contributed to the formation of the author's poetics.
