Abstract:
This article reconstructs Giuseppe Alberigo’s role in «Concilium» from his entry in 1963 into the editorial committee of the Church History section. It shows how the journal became for Alberigo both an international laboratory of historical-theological research and a place for building intellectual and ecumenical networks. Particular attention is given to the tensions that emerged after 1968, when «Concilium» increasingly privileged socioreligious interdisciplinarity and reduced the autonomy of Church History. Against this trend, Alberigo defended the historical dimension of theology, criticized the marginalization of Vatican II in the postconciliar debate, and insisted on the need to relate current ecclesial problems to long-term historical processes. Within this framework, he also intervened in major postconciliar controversies, including the debate on the proposed "Lex Ecclesiae fundamentalis" and on the reform of papal ministry. The 1975 special issue on ecclesial renewal and papal service is presented as the culmination of this trajectory, where collegiality, communion, local churches, and ecumenical credibility converged in a broader reflection on ecclesial authority.
