Margherita Russo is a Full professor of Economic Policy at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. After completing her MA in Economics at the University of Cambridge (UK), she began her academic career at the University of Pescara (Italy) in 1985 and subsequently at the University of Modena (since 1989).
Her main research interests include: analysis of processes of innovation and competence networks, effects of innovation on the organisation of labour, structure and change in local productive systems, evaluation of innovation policies, industrial districts, network policy modelling and assessment, socio-economic impact of natural multi-hazard disasters, innovation in industrial districts, automotive global supply chain, and international trade. She has directed several research projects in the mechanical industry in Italy. From 2000 to 2015, she directed "Officina Emilia", an action-research project at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, aiming to regenerate the competences needed for re-industrialisation and to improve the quality of the education system. In the years 205-2018 she directed the research project "Energia Sisma Emilia" on the analysis and models of the socio-economic impact of disaster risk reduction, aiming at assessing the impact of the 2012 earthquake in the Emilia-Romagna (Italy). She was responsible for work packages in international research projects on innovation and European research projects on theory, models and analysis of innovation processes. She has been appointed by the Italian Ministry of University and Research as the Representative of Italy in the OECD WPTIP-Working Party on innovation and technology policy (2016-21), and the Representative of the Italian Ministry in the EUSALP - European Union Strategy for Alpine Regions, Action 1-“To develop an effective research and innovation ecosystem” (2016-21). She is currently a member of the scientific committee of Fondazione Giacomo Brodolini and Gerpisa.
