GRANA Costantino

Costantino Grana is Full Professor at the “Enzo Ferrari” Department of Engineering of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, where he teaches courses in Multimedia Data Processing and Fundamentals of Computer Science. His research lies at the intersection of Medical Imaging, Image Processing, and Computer Vision, with a focus on connected components algorithms, medical image segmentation, and content-based image and video retrieval. His work has contributed to fields such as nephrology, dermoscopy, and the digital analysis of cultural heritage materials, including historical manuscripts.

He is the author of more than 200 scientific publications, including 53 journal papers and 149 conference papers, with over 9,000 citations and an h-index of 42 (Google Scholar, 2025). His 2003 paper in IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence on object detection and shadow removal has more than 2,300 citations.

Professor Grana has participated in numerous national and European research projects, including Horizon 2020 initiatives such as DeepHealth and ELISE, as well as FP7 and CIP-Pilot programs like SKINSPECTION, DIAGNOPTICS, and ADVANCE. His recent involvement in the PNRR project FIT4MEDROB focuses on innovation in medical robotics and digital health technologies.

Throughout his academic career, he has supervised several PhD candidates and more than fifty graduate theses, and is the author of an educational text on C programming. From 2016 to 2022, he served as President of the Computer Engineering degree programs at UNIMORE, contributing to the modernization of curricula and the integration of research and education.

He is a member of IEEE, ACM, and IAPR, and has served as evaluator for national and international research projects, guest editor for special issues, and reviewer for major journals and conferences.
